BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a self-defense technique, as well as a martial art and combat sport based on grappling, ground fighting, and submission holds.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu builds strength, technique, stamina and confidence. It is built around the concept that a smaller, weaker person can defend themselves against a bigger, stronger opponent by using leverage and weight distribution to their advantage. Training can be a fun sport and also be used in self-defense, as it promotes physical fitness, builds character, and provides an opportunity to form community with others that have similar interests.

Info about our Volunteer Coach
Isaac Chung started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2008 and received a black belt in 2017 from Andre Terencio and Hannette Staack while training in Chicago. He regularly competed (mostly IBJJF) throughout that time until he transitioned into a coaching role. He spent 4 years teaching classes for kids/youth, adults, and competitors, and currently trains at Ralph Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in Berkeley under Eduardo Fraga.
"Through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I found a powerful community of supportive life-long friends, colleagues and mentors. Through training, I was fortunate to develop and learn many life skills in addition to learning the art itself, especially resilience, perseverance, and dedication. I strongly believe that character development can be accelerated through disciplined training in the right kind of environment and mentorship, and my goal is to help others experience the positive benefits of training. I look forward to bringing Jiu-Jitsu to DSAL and to anyone who is willing to learn!"
HEALTH & FITNESS AND PUBLIC SAFETY
Known as the 'gentle art', Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that allows a smaller, weaker person to successfully defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker. Jiu-Jitsu focuses on taking the fight to the ground and applying chokeholds or joint locks to defeat their opponent, giving youth the strength and confidence they need to navigate the world around them.
